Athos - W. Face

Rock, Mixed, Traditional

The Monastery of Agios Pavlos and in the background (on the right) the west side of the mountain with the “West ridge” in its center.

The west face of Mount Athos reaches the sea, hosting on its rocks the Monastery of Dionysios, the Monastery of Agios Pavlos, the New Skete and the Skete of Agia Anna.

Access to the west face starts from the Monastery of Agios Pavlos, from where a dirt road leads to its base after 5Km. Monastery of Agios Pavlos can be reached from the sea or by hiking from another point (Monastery of Dionysios with 45min hike, New Skete with 30min hike, Skete of Agia Anna with 60min hike, etc.).

The pillars and the gullies of the west face end at the summit, where the church of the Transfiguration of the Savior is located. The return from the summit is by descending to the Skete of Agia Anna (5h hike).

Due to the large length of the routes, we must take into account the possibility of bivouac.
