Zerf - Arvanitidi

Rock, Mixed, Traditional

The route “Zerf - Arvanitidi” (V+, 300m), better known as “Zerf’s slab”, was realized on 23/7/1964 by M. Zerf - E. Arvanitidi.

The line is located in the center of the crag and follows slabs and dihedrals until it reaches the top.

Its first repetition was realized on 16/8/1969 by O. Ioannidis - S. Gounaridis.

Its first winter climb was made on 29/12/2006 by V. Naxakis (solo) and the second was made the next day, 30/12/2006, by V. Naxakis - M. Styllas - Th. Christopoulos, following approximately the same line as the rock route.

To repeat the route, a series of nuts, some friends and several slings are needed.

The route is considered beautiful and easy, receiving a large number of repetitions every year, but also many variations, especially at the beginning, since on the wall that is full of cracks, dihedrals and ledges, one can move freely. This does not mean that it does not pose any risks, since in 2015, there was a fatal accident due to a climber’s fall.

Note: E. Eleftheriadis, in his book “Olympus: Climbing Routes 1930-1978” (1978 edition), places “Zerf - Arvanitidi” in Skolio, while Skala has only one route, “Botteri - Natsi”. N. Nezis adopts the same in his book “Olympus - The Mountain of Gods & People” (2019 edition). Does this mean that “Zerf - Arvanitidi” is not in Skala but somewhere in Skolio? Or maybe when the route was established, it was published as belonging to Skolio, considering the crag as part of Skolio?
