The first ascent of the route “Argonaut expedition” (V, 250m) was realized on 20/6/1999 by A. Theodoropoulos - Th. Michailidis.
The line moves on the impressive monolith of Anafi’s east cape and it is the first climbing route on the island. The line follows the pillar of the northern face, which is visible in the skyline, looking eastwards from town’s port. During the first ascent, the route was climbed starting from the sea and using traditional protection only.
Each of the route’s belays is equipped with 1 piton. The required gear for this climb comprises a set of nuts, a set of friends and some pitons. Climbing up to the peak takes approximately 7h.
The base of the route is only approachable by boat, which can be rent at the port. Return involves following a well-formed footpath that passes by the monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, which is also known as the New Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa.
