Vourinos - Lefkopigi

Lefkopigi and in the background the snow-capped Vourinos.

Lefkopigi is a mountain village in the Kozani prefecture of the Macedonia region, located southwest of the town of Kozani, on the eastern foothills of Vourinos and at an altitude of 653m. During the 19th century there were five watermills in operation at the village, while today, the 1916-built 15m tall church tower can still be seen.

Near Lefkopigi, on the Elafopetra formation, 18 sport climbing routes can be found, with varied difficulties of 3c to 7a+ and a height between 11m and 19m on the high-quality limestone. With a southeastern orientation the crag is ideal for climbing during the spring and autumn months, while during the summer it is under the shade after 3pm. To repeat any of the routes, a 60m rope and 10 quickdraws are required.

Access

Lefkopigi is 10Km from Kozani and is easily accessible via the regional road to the village of Aiani. To reach the crag starting from Lefkopigi we follow paved roads on a southwest bearing towards the chapel of Agios Athanasios and then continue on a dirt road for 5Km until the base of the crag, from where the 5min approach trail begins.

Climbing history

The bolting of Elafopetra crag began in 2009 by A. Vomvas and G. Patsonas, who equiped the route “First” (7a, 15m) using the top-rope technique. The effort continued in 2010 with “Thanasis” (5c, 17m) and then, following the collaboration of local climbers in 2011, another four routes were bolted, by D. Matiakis and A. Kosmidou. The year 2012 saw the zenith of new routing on Elafopetra with seven additions by G. Patsonas, and K. Bilionis. Since then, five more routes by unknown contributors have been established.
