Lefka Ori - Svourichti

Svourichti covered in snow.

Svourichti is one of the 50 highest peaks of the White Mountains and reaches 2337m.

Winter routes have been climbed there, since the snow that falls in winter is enough to create the right conditions. The winter season usually lasts from January to April, depending on the weather conditions and the snowfall that has preceded in the previous months.

In order to climb in winter, one should arrange for nearby accommodation, either in tents on the Livada plateau, or in the Svourichti refuge (3rd Refuge of EOS Chanion).

To access the area from Chania, we follow the road to Malaxa and then continue towards Kampoi, where at the end of the road we meet Madaro (1h). From there we continue on a dirt road, in parts difficult to pass that requires a 4x4 vehicle, and in 30 minutes we reach the Volikas refuge. From the refuge, following the E4 path towards the peaks of Spathi, Agio Pnevma and Svourichti, we finally reach Livada after 6 hours of hiking. Great care is needed in the area between Spathi and Ornio where, in case of limited visibility, we may find ourselves walking between sinkholes. The route and orientation are extremely difficult even for the most knowledgeable about the area, which is why the use of equipment (map, compass, GPS) and experience in the mountain are required.

For the return, we follow the opposite route from that of the access.
