Geraneia - Akrotirio Melagkavi

Rock, Sport

The Melagkavi Lighthouse.

Akrotirio Melagkavi is the southwestern cape of the Perachora peninsula, part of the Corinth prefecture and west of Heraion Lake. The remote location was advantageous to the ancient Megareans who constructed the Heraion, a sanctuary dedicated to Hera, which operated for 1000 years. The homonymous stone-built lighthouse was erected in 1897.

At the Lighthouse crag, which is on the southwest aspect of the outcrop of Agios Nikolaos, there are five (5) sport climbing routes with difficulties from 5b to 6b and a maximum length of 21m on the impressive limestone slab. Due to its protected position, it is ideal for days with strong northerly winds. To repeat any of the routes a 60m rope and 12 quickdraws are required.

Access

To access the Lighthouse crag, we follow the road from Heraion Lake towards the archeological site of Heraion, making a left turn on a dirt road just after the last houses. Continuing onto the dirt road for 100m we reach a parking area from where we follow a marked trail through the forest for less than 5 minutes to the base of the crag. We should not follow the trail to the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, because it leads to the top of the crag rather than to its base.

Climbing history

The development of the Lighthouse crag was completed during the winter of 2021-2022 by T. De Mazière, K. and A. Bečan along with their son Aron, and with the financial support of local businesses.

Warning: Due to the proximity of the crag with sea water and its corrosive effects, increased attention is required during your visit.
