Avantas - Agia Marina

Rock, Sport

Climbers on the routes “Koufi” and “33kg”.

The crag of Agia Marina is the first one which a visitor will see when driving into the valley from the south, as such it was also the first crag of the area that was bolted. This is a limestone crag facing northwest and as a result it only has direct sunlight at noon. The routes range in difficulty from 5b to 6c and in length from 12m to 20m, while the anchors are open-type.

Access

Approaching the area via National Road EO35 from Alexandroupolis, the crag of Agia Marina is near the entrance of the valley of Avantas, around 350m past the last house of the village, on the right side of the road. There is a parking area just below the crag, while the hike to its base is through the obvious slope, which although steep, does not exceed 2min in duration.

Climbing history

The crag was bolted by A. Du in 2016 and 2017, with the financial assistance of friends as well as the president of the local cultural association. The crags’ name is derived from the iconostasis which is located at its base.
