Geraneia (1369m) is a large mountain range forming natural border between the Attica and Corinth prefectures, west of Megara, and offering spectacularly steep terrain on account of its position close to the Corinthian Rift. The large elevation differences in combination with the high-quality limestone produce an environment of great natural beauty but also of climbing interest.
Large parts of Geraneia remain densely forested, with settlement being limited to the seaside areas, and as a result the massif is an important wildlife habitat. To the west, the peak of Pintiza (1032m) dominates above Loutraki and protects the villages of Perachora, Heraion lake, as well as the homonymous Hellenistic sanctuary. To the east is the highest peak, Makryplagi (1369m) with its long ridge and steep slopes.
Today, Geraneia is an area of seaside tourism with emphasis on the beautiful beaches, with many also visiting the Heraion of Perachora and the skete of the Monastery of Patapios. The area has, however, been a center for climbing as early as 1948. In recent years and within the context of rejuvenation of the local crags, Nikitas Floros has undertaken both the bolting of new routes and also an in-depth historical study.
Access
Due to its position, Geraneia is easily accessible via the Athens - Corinth national road, through the Loutraki exit. Most of the crags relate to the rural Loutraki - Perachora road, while in contrast Paliovouna and Megali Ntouskia necessitate a combined vehicular and hiking approach. Alternatively, the center of the range can be reached from Agioi Theodoroi via difficult dirt roads.
Routes overview
The high quality of limestone prevalent in Geraneia led to the development of traditional climbs in the 60s and 70s, while in 2019 sport climbing was introduced to the area. There are 92 routes in Geraneia, all rock climbing, graded between 4c and 8b and of a height from 15m up to 300m, with a variety of kinesiology and terrain. Geraneia is ideal for climbing during the Spring and Autumn, even though some crags are above 500m.
The most popular traditional routes have been established on the mountainous complex of Paliovouna, with difficulties as high as VIII and a max height of 300m, while Heraion Lake offers a more accessible alternative, with “Difficult exit” (VII-, 110m) being the most characteristic line of the crag. A limited number of traditional routes can also be found at Petra Perachoras, as well as two historic climbs on the North face of Megali Ntouskia.
Most of the sport routes can be found at Petra Perachoras, in total 58 graded between 5b and 8b spread between four sectors which offer opportunities for shade throughout the day. At the same time, there are two more sports crags, at lower elevation, the Elephant crag next to the Heraion Lake traditional sector with 11 routes, and the Lighthouse crag, near Akro Melagkavi with five (5) routes. To repeat any of the sport routes at Geraneia, an 80m rope and at least 20 quickdraws are necessary.
Warning: Due to the increased danger of wildfires and the strong winds prevailing in the area, special care is required to avoid being entrapped, especially during the summer months.
